I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty curious to find out what an “InnerScan” is. It sounds like something from a science fiction novel or movie. I’m imaging something out of Star Wars or Star Trek. Tanita is known for its fitness technology, so it probably is pretty much space-age, but let’s find out more, shall we?
While I’m still wondering about my comprehension of the “InnerScan” thing, the word ‘comprehensive’ seems to make a lot of sense when it comes to this monitor. It uses advanced technology that, until now, was only available to doctors, health clubs, and athletes. Now you can have this same technology in your own home. And the device is just about the size of a regular bathroom scale!
Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA)
BIA is the technology used to measure the following:
- Percentage of body fat
- Hydration percentage which is determined by gender (Female: 45-60%; Male 50-65%)
- Metabolic age
- Bone mass
- Physique rating (evaluation of body fat in terms of gender and weight – under fat to obese
In case you’re wondering about the “metabolic age” phrase… Your chronological age is how old you are in years, months, days, hours, you know the drill. Metabolic age is based on your basal (base) metabolic rate with the basal metabolic rate of other people your age. Your rating may make you very happy or very angry, but it will give you an idea of your fitness needs.
Tanita BC554 Ironman Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Features/Specs
The device measures 13 x 2 x 12 inches and weighs 9 lbs. Four AA batteries are necessary and are included with the unit. Because this is the same technology that has been used in technical settings, it is very accurate. Up to four users can utilize the unit and keep data in the memory. The Guest Mode allows single time users to try out the device. The 2.25 inch LCD screen makes reading results very easy. The Tanita BC554 Ironman Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Elite Series can be used by people up to 330 pounds and has a ten year warranty.
Apparently the term “InnerScan” refers to the fact that this product evaluates a user’s entire body composition.
The Tanita BC554 Ironman Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Elite Series uses a small electrical current to determine some of the data. If you are pregnant or have a pacemaker or other internal electronic device, do NOT use the body fat feature. This is VERY IMPORTANT for your safety! The small current is safe for healthy, non-pregnant adults, but the effect on the fetus is unknown and the effect on the pacemaker may interrupt the cycle.
If you’re going to keep this in your bathroom or workout room, you might want to know that it is quite attractive. Silver accents and glass set off the large display and would certainly look at home in most decors. It’s very fashionable.
Weight can be customized by pounds, kilograms, or stone pounds. Set a personal key to track your individual results. Adults enter age, gender, and height. for children aged 7-17, only weight and body fat percentage will be displayed. There is a guest mode for the one-time user and a key that will allow weight only measurement.
Don’t Take My Word for It
If you are anything like me, you want to hear from people who have actually used the device before deciding to make a purchase. The Tanita BC554 Ironman Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Elite Series has a 4.1 out of 5 star average review, and here are some of the things commenters said that led to that rating:
One happy user found that while the weight was unchanged, he was dropping body fat consistently, which was a great motivator. Ease of use was universally praised as was the accuracy. Another user reported using this as a part of a fitness regime that led him to go from a size 44 to a size 32 pant!
You Can’t Please Everyone
Some negative comments were that evaporation from placing the unit in the bathroom affected results and the damage was not taken care of under warranty. Also noted was that the results are only consistent on an even, hard, surface – which makes sense to me anyway.
