Hyperglycaemia (spelt hyperglycemia in the US) is when blood glucose levels are too high.
A diabetic can become hyperglycaemic after excess eating, and/or if insufficient insulin is administered. This condition comes on gradually over many hours (even a few days) and can lead to the following symptoms:
- excessive urination
- sweet/fruity smelling breath
- rapid breathing
- rapid, weak pulse
- warm dry skin
If the condition is not treated, it can lead to unconsciousness. You should call an ambulance immediately if you suspect someone is hyperglycaemic.
